Project Overview

CP/HK Udagalauda Vidyalaya, Illagolla is a rural school in the Haguranketha Education Zonal division, Nuwara Eliya District in Central Province.  It is a secondary school with 238 students that offers classes up to Grade 11. Most of the parents of the students are laborers in tea factories or farmers, and their income is not sufficient for living.

The Ministry of Education and the Sri Lankan Government established the monetary policy of “not allowing capital expenditure” in the year 2022 as a result of the current economic crisis and the country’s educational system. As a result, the majority of schools do not receive any government funding for school development. Despite years of requests for furniture from many sources, the school has been unable to secure funding because of the high cost. Ten years ago, the school has received its last set of tables and chairs for children, which were intended for the primary school grades. Although students are growing up, they have to use the primary-school grade desks and chairs. (Size of desks and chairs of grades 6 through 10 students are not in standard sizes) In addition, furniture is not available for the teachers.

The trust donated funds to obtain hundred and twenty students’ desk and chairs, and twenty-two teachers’ desks and chairs. The project was guided by Brotherhood for Humanity, University of Moratuwa
